HISTORY OF THE CODE

In December 1999, the Joint Select Committee on the Retailing Sector produced a report called "Fair Market or Market Failure?" which recommended the establishment of an ombudsman for the Produce and Grocery Industry.

In response to this, the Australian Government establishment of a fully government-funded industry ombudsman to assist in the resolution of industry disputes and amendments to the Trade Practices Act 1974 to improve access by small businesses to remedies and damages.

In February 2000, an industry committee was established by the Australian Government. The committee was tasked with developing a voluntary industry code of conduct and an Ombudsman service to assist in resolving disputes in the retail grocery industry.
